Subjective careers among Public Security Police Officers in Portugal Susana Durão This text proposes the retrieval of Everett Hughes'
concept of the 'subjective career' (1958), embedded in a social theory of
organizations. More specifically, the objective consists of proposing an
analysis of how police officers perceive a certain rationality in their
professional careers. The text is based on a recent ethnographic survey
conducted at Lisbon police stations. This research explored the subjective
constructions that underlie the stages of the officers' professional life and
the definition of certain policing styles. Whenever relevant, some manifest
differences between the socialization of men and of women in these contexts are
identified. Download (in Portuguese)
Inconsistent treatment in a therapeutic community Taniele Rui Based on the experience of a patient called
Antônio, this paper intends to show the ambiguities within a therapeutic
community aimed at guiding drug addicts to abstinence. The objective is to
review the inconsistency in the treatment and the way in which individuals and
the institution dealt with uncertainties and doubts. Although reluctant,
Antônio stopped using drugs, returned to school and started working. The
institution maintains its methodology, discursively revising these
inconsistencies. I intend to contribute to the literature about total
institutions and shed light on a universe that has a lot to tell us about a
specific kind of treatment given to drug users in Brazil. Download (in Portuguese)
Accountability and its Different Aspects Involving the Control of the Police
Activity in Brazil
Viviane de Oliveira Cubas In this
article we show that the accountability mechanisms have figured as one of the
main indicators of the quality of a democracy, considering that the way the
states account their actions demonstrates the level of their social and
political order. The aim of this article is to present a summary of the definitions of
accountability found in the available literature and to consider them according
to an empirical research made in 2008 with the police ombudsman system in
Brazil, which works as police controlling agencies and, as the research
demonstrates, presents three different profiles. The text highlights that some
aspects of this debate predominate when the control of police actions is
focused. Download (in Portuguese)
The Role of the Types of First Degree
Murders in the Social Construction of the Incrimination of the Individual by
Prosecutors: Belo Horizonte, Cases Between 2007 and 2009 Klarissa Almeida Silva The
discussion presented in this article leads to the question of how the
social construction of the author's incrimination and the construction of
judiciary truths by Minas Gerais 1st and 2nd Court of Jury prosecutors are
operated. We use here a typology of homicides created after 265 charges of
first degree murders made by these actors of the Justice System between 2003
and 2005. The steps the prosecutions originated from theses charges had taken
between 2007 and 2009 are then described. This is done in the context of a
'mixed' (KANT DE LIMA, 2008) and 'loosely integrated' (COELHO, 19986) system. Download (in Portuguese)
The Slaves' Strike in Ponte das Tábuas
Farm in 1850 (Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro) Luiz Alberto Couceiro This
article, by means of a case study of a criminal prosecution of the Court of
Appeal of Nova Friburgo in 1850, tries to gather and analyze the factors that
allow to reconstruct the network of relations that bore 'tacit agreements'
related to slaves who came from northern provinces, mainly Pernambuco, to Rio
de Janeiro and São Paulo, and the circumstances in which the conflicts happened
in the second half of the 19th century. Such conflicts were linked to the
understanding of the working rules in the farms and to the concepts of right,
'legitimate punishment' and crime among slaves, free people, landlords and
their representatives. Download (in Portuguese)
